About Us

SHORT MODULES ON CLIMATE ACTION FOR MALAYSIA

Bite-Size Climate Action is a series of fun, flexible, and immersive short online modules designed to inspire Malaysian youth to act for the climate. From forests to food to electricity, the uniquely Malaysian videos, podcasts, quizzes and more will demystify the science of climate change and empower you to be the change you want to see.

MEET THE TEAM

Dr. Helena Varkkey

Political Scientist

Dr Helena Varkkey is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of International and Strategic Studies, University of Malaya. Her research focuses on the governance of transboundary haze pollution and the political economy of palm oil in Southeast Asia. More broadly, she seeks to understand how economic development can be reconciled with environmental sustainability in this resource-rich region. Her monograph on "The Haze Problem in the Southeast Asia:Palm Oil and Patronage" was published in 2016.

Atmospheric Scientist

Dr Matthew Ashfold is an Associate Professor and Head of the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM). His research encompasses various aspects of atmospheric and climate science, often in the context of tropical Asia. Dr Matt's teaching responsibilities at UNM include courses focussing on the climate system and climate change.

Dr. Matthew Ashfold

Dr. Sheeba Chenoli

Atmospheric Scientist

Dr Sheeba Chenoli is a senior lecturer at University Malaya. She has a keen interest in meteorology and climate and has been conducting research on the atmospheric dynamics and climate of the tropical and polar regions. She also chairs an action group on Tropical and Antarctic Teleconnection (TATE) under the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR).

Sustainability Scientist

Dr. Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad is an Associate Professor at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya. Her research interest is primarily to understand the relationship between the development of science, technology and innovation (STI) and environmental protection, particularly within the context of sustainable development and associated challenges to late-industrialising countries.

Dr. Zeeda Fatimah

Dr. Amira Firdaus

Social Scientist

Dr. Amira Firdaus is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, at Universiti Malaya (UM). She is also currently Deputy Director at UM's academic staff professional development centre, ADeC. Amira's multidisciplinary research interests include online learning, positive/ constructive  communication, and wellbeing and happiness. Amira regularly conducts  and moderates webinars related to teaching and learning (T&L), as well as wellbeing and happiness at UM.

Communication Manager

Vignaa Ganesan is a Master’s Degree Candidate at University of Malaya, Malaysia. She worked as a Research Assistant under Dr. Helena Varkkey in the Centre for Latin American Studies (CLAS) under a project called Grand Challenges. She has presented paper in 14th Singapore Forum Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies at Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore . She has also attended the ERASMUS + International Credit Mobility Programme for Postgraduate Exchange Programme which was hosted by University of Glasgow, United Kingdom in 2018.

Vignaa Ganesan

Nur Widad

Content Creator

Nur Widad is currently a student in the department of Media Studies, Universiti Malaya. She finished her TESL foundation in UiTM and is planning to further her studies specialising in filmmaking. She is co-founder of ‘Tiga Suku’ a production group specialising in wedding photography, videography and short films. She is now involved in the Bite-Size Climate Action as the content creator for TikTok.

Content Creator

Maryam Halim is an environmental studies student currently pursuing her degree in the department of Geography, Universiti Malaya. Prior to that, she completed her Foundation in Science in UiTM. Currently, she is involved in several projects ranging from self-improvement to environmental advocacy programmes. She is also involved in the Bite-Size Climate Action as one of the content creators for TikTok.

Maryam Halim

Mustafa Wehbi

Graphic Designer

Mustafa is a Video Creator and Graphic Designer graduated from department of Media Studies at University of Malaya. He is now a Master’s Candidate of English Language Studies at UKM in Malaysia. He is a former trainee of Al-Jazeera Network. Currently, he creates historical video stories for Nas Aden, besides his promotional works for some local and international companies.

Mohd Anis is an Instructional Designer at Academic Enhancement & Leadership Development Centre (ADeC)University of Malaya. His specialisation is in transforming the lecturers syllabus and courses into digital content. Previously he was actively involved in The Oceon Cleanup(TOC) environmental projects in Klang, Selangor.

Mohd Anis

Aliyyah Nuha Faiqah Azman Firdaus

Translator

Aliyyah Nuha Faiqah is a recipient of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Postgraduate Scholarship 2020. She is currently pursuing her PhD studies at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hiroshima University, Japan in applied linguistics. Her research interests are in the field of language policy and planning and discourse analysis. She is a freelance translator and also a Lifetime Member of the Malaysian Translators Association (MTA) since 2017.
